It was beginning to dri y.lc when we arrived at the corner of W ashington and Church on that late September morning. All of us had come to the great University to make our first stab at “higher learning.” Some of the group had already seen this maze and tumble of buildings on the east bank of the Mississippi that make up the University of Minnesota. Hut for many it w as the first visit. We soon learned to take in stride the long dashes to sessions in distant classrooms, waiting lines at every other door and window', crowded cafeterias, overstuffed streetcars. Somehow w e managed to worm our way into Memorial stadium for the turf-rending games of Gopher gridders. Egged on by an all-enthusiastic Rooter (dub, we strained our lungs for old Ski-U-Mah and spent weekends recovering our voices. Everywhere we went there were lines, crowds, masses of mechanical people all in a hurry to get someplace else. Gradually we abandoned the pocket maps of the campus and followed the well worn paths from here to there. The jumble slowly took shape. We ventured along new walks and caught new views of old buildings. Page 10

We took note of the progress of each new building and paused now and then to watch another wall of the old M F. firetrap tumble under the onslaught of a wrecking crew. Yes, the campus itself was as alive as the human element. On Saturday nights we took advantage of the Union dances to meet new faces and we gradually grew into the life of the University community. Fraternities and sororities launched their rushing programs and we raced about looking into the insides of these “secret” organizations. Only we found out that the people were quite normal and the insides weren't secret. The Greeks had much to offer and many of us signed on. Homecoming was our first really big event. For the first time we felt a real parr of the L . Somehow the spirit of the thing caught and spread until we were just a big happy conglomeration of kids having a gay time. Bur it was over all too soon. The first thing we knew . winter was here. And it hit the city just as hard as any other part of the Page 11
