dedicated to... This issue of the Gopher, the mid-century volume, is about the students who have played their hand at being part of this University. Without them this hook would mean nothing, in fact, would he nothing. Memories seldom record changes, leather they form comparisons of what is with what was. This volume is simply a record, in picture and story, of what was at the University of Minnesota in 1950. Certainly there are better times and worse times yet to come hut no one can deprive these students of their ups and downs at this institution during 1950. 'Phis hook is intended as a reminder of these days and these events. 'I bis hook is about the students and to them it is dedicated.

foreword Newspapers, magazines anil radio for the past year have been spreading word of the cold war in Europe. News of government ami politics has been carried to every home. Raging Hoods of the northwest will provide tales for our grandchildren. These are items that people will long remember or soon forget. Rut the usual run of things at the University in 1950 was important to every student of that year and it is well to have some record of those events. Here, in the 1950 Gopher, the staff has recorded campus occasions of the entire year. This hook includes special days, outstanding events, the hum-drum of everyday activity. The story of the Gophers' ups and downs on the gridiron is carried in detail. Nearly every branch of student government is represented, formally and informally. Of course the Queens are in again; more of them, and attractively presented. Thousands of faces appear on these pages, for the campus was scoured from the administrative and academic phases of the University to summer trips on the Donna Mae. 1950. That it marked the middle of another century wras incidental. It was a big year and a good year at Minnesota and the Gopher has attempted to preserve these lives and times as an integral part of University history.
