The Knoll typifies the simple demands of society of two generations ago: the Mall typifies the highly complex and intricate social organization of today. Both the Knoll and the Mall exist, primarily for learning and the discovery of new truth. Judging minor appointments, transferring funds from one budget to another, assigning space in University buildings, selecting speakers for Convocation, and inter- preting University regulations regarding individual cases are illustrations of his Varied duties. The investigative function involves: first, regular compiling of statistics regarding departmental instruc- tion, size of classes, and cost per unit of instruction: and second, study, through committees of which the Dean is a member and often chairman, to decide the Adminis- tration's policy in matters affecting the University.
