Z Z Especially commend me to your beloved president, Dr. Northrop, who Z Z retires from the work which he has made his own and in which he has been so Z Z warmhearteclly successful. Croesus or some similarly antique chap says: Call Z no man happy until he is deadf' This remark applies especially to the stormy Z Z careers of college presidents, who live always in the Sturm and Drangn of Z Z public affairs, the squills and stress of ambitious young life, the impatience of Z Z rising merit, eager to be known on its own valuation, and withal in the possibili- Z Z ties of love and affection of those few-relatively few-who can really know Z Z him. Z Z . . . Z Z Dr. Northrop will soon be officially dead, and the rest of us, his contem- Z Z poraries, will speedily and cheerfully follow, but he is one who will die in no Z Z other sense. l-lis memory will live in the hearts of lVlinnesota's Alumni and Z Z sons of Alumni down to many generations. .For he was not merely or even Z Z chiefly a great executive, but a man overflowing with friendliness, whose first Z Z interest was in the lives of those who came to him for training. He need not Z f Z heed the words of Croesus. Why? Because it was freighted Z . . . . Z Z with a sense of personality, of the man behind the winged word. And the Z . . . f Z same is true wherever he has spoken. Wldel ln demand as a s eaker, Z Z y P Z Z reco nlzed as one of the finest orators in the United States, the earnestness and Z Z g . . . Z Z honest , the ma nlhcent common sense, the moral force in his messa e, have Z Y g g Z Z been felt in his addresses, extempore or formal, and placed them always far Z f . . . . Z above the cunning rhetoric of the professional haranguer. Simple vernacular, Z Z based on rl ht feelin and steadied by a robust grip on reality, unerrin , indeed, Z Z g g g Z Z in its feeling for the genuine things, his speech rises to eloquence because the Z Z man himself, inspired by some noble thought, has risen with it and stood behind Z . . . . f Z lt to reinforce its meaning. I have never known a speaker more capable of Z Z serzlng an occasion in danger of conventional treatment, specialized view or Z Z P . . . . . Z party asslon, and resorting it to what might be called its large, human values. Z Z p - Z Z And so, alon with res ect and honor, and over and above all that re uta- Z Z g P p Z Z tion can imply, has gone love, the love of all who know him. Life can give no Z Z nobler gift than this to any human being. What an example to the young, in Z . . . . Z Z how dee a sense such a ersonallty IS educatlve to every human soul with whom Z Z P P Z Z it is associated, nay even touches ln passing by! And what a big gap is left Z . . . . . . Z Z when such an 1nHuence is wrthdrawn. Harder, far, than any administrative Z Z problem for his successor, will be the task of filling the place in the hearts of Z Z his co-workers, friends and lovers made vacant by the de arture of C rus Z Z p y Z Z - as - Z Northrop, a character which, for so long, has stood four-square to every wind Z f n . . .
