American progress and If-'ffa 0 , j-Qftiff development are not myths. American education ' ago had is a modern miracle. The growth of the state ', ' ,sf--' '-f. Q1 ' ,' Universities is a verified legend. The University .',- m ,I ,gs of Nlinnesota has not the development, the cult- ' ure, the scholarship, of the universities of the old world, nor even of its sister institutions in the eastg but it contains possibilities which in their rapid growth give promise of equal efficiency and corresponding importance. The changes which have taken place in this University during the last decade are worthy of note. There is much to praise, much to criticize. The rapidity of growth, the complexity of organization, the varied interests and purposes of education, the increasing responsibilities of the enlarged departments, are some of the many features which might be treated in an extensive survey of the progress of this University. Such difficult problems, however, interesting and important though they may be, are not to be solved in the present article. lt is our purpose to sketch in a very brief and supere iicial manner some of the visible and more material improvements and alterations that are to be noted in the everyday life about us. i N Yf HF. The expansion of the University in days to come is bound to follow in the wake of that movement started by this same Board. Another generation will hnd the easterly limits of the grounds bounded by Oak Street. lt is at the eastern side of the Campus that we find the greatest changes.
