ALLAN F. SMITH Dean and Professor of Law Born in 1911, Dean Smith received his A,B. Degree in 1933 from Nebraska State Teachers College, his LL.B. degree in 1940 from the University of Nebraska, his LL.M. degree in 1941 from the University of Michigan, and his S.J.D. degree in 1950 from the University of Michigan. He was admitted to practice in Nebraska in 1940 and in Michigan in 1950. He was Acting Associate Professor of Law at Stanford University in 1946. He came to the University of Michigan Law School in 1947 and has been Dean of the Law School since 1960. He has taught Municipal Corporations, Conveyancing, Criminal Law, Insurance, Property, Securities and Land Utilization. He is the author of a treatise on Personal Life Insurance Trustsg co-author of Cases and Materials on Property-1195155 2d Ed. 19603 co-author Simes and Smith, The Law of Future Interests f1956jg and has published articles in various legal publications. He was Senior Attorney in the OPA from 1941 to 19433 lst Lt. U.S. Army from 1943 to 19463 and Chief Counsel OPA in 1946. At present the Dean is Commissioner at Large of the Board of Commissioners of the State Bar of Michigan. Dean Smith is married and has two children. I , new-,tuv I am happy to take this opportunity to extend a farewell and my best wishes to the Michigan Law School Class of 1965. You will probably find it hard to believe right now that your three years in Law School comprise avery short span of time. By the time you return for your 25th Reunion in 1989, however, I think you'1l agree that the training period was very short for the multitude of professional tasks you will have been called upon to perform. The surprising thing is that you will find that the training, short though it is, has equipped you admirably to perform those tasks. The members of the faculty who have served you take vicarious pride in your accomplishments. I know that they will receive from you and from your accomplishments a full measure of justifiable pride. CHARLES W. JOINER Professor of Law and Assistant Dean Born in 1916, Mr. Joiner received his B.A, in 1937 and J.D. in 1939 from the State University of Iowa. He was admitted to practice in Iowa in 1939. He practiced in Des Moines from 1939 to 1947. He was with the United States Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945. He was an assistant professor of law at the University of Michigan from 1947 to 1949, associate professor of law from 1950 to 1952, pro- fessor of law since 1953 and associate dean since 1960. Professor Joiner teaches Trials Sz Appeals and Practice Court, and Jurisdiction and Judgments. He is the author of Trials and Appeals and joint author of Cases and Statutes on Jurisdiction and Judgments and Civil Justice and the Jury. He is a member of the Committee on Uniform Rules of Evidence for the Federal Courts, the Committee on Civil Procedure of the Michigan State Bar, the Board of Commissioners for the State Bar of Michigan, and the Standing Com- mittee on Ethics of the ABA. Professor Joiner is married and has three children. ROY L. STEINHEIMER, JR. Professor of Law and Admissions Officer Born in 1916, Mr. Steinheimer received his A.B, in 1937 from the University of Kansas, and his J.D. in 1940 from the University of Michigan. He was admitted to practice in New York in 1941 and in Michigan in 1951. He practiced with Sullivan 81 Cromwell in New York City before coming to Michigan to teach in 1950. He teaches Bills and Notes, Sales, and a seminar in Commerical Transactions. Pro- fessor Steinheimer is married, lives on a farm near Ann Arbor, and pilots his own plane. .1- -nl ROY FRANKLIN PROFFITT Professor of Law Assistant Dean of the Law School Mr. Proffitt was born in 1918. He attended the University of Nebraska where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1940. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy, holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander, U.S.N.R., at the end of the war. He received his J .D. degree from the University of Michigan Law School in January 1948. After a brief period of practice with the firm of Miller, McKinley Si Walsh, in Greeley, Colorado,he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Law, where he eventually was promoted to the rank of professor. As technical adviser to the Missouri State Senate Criminal Law Revision Committee from 1951 to 1954, Mr. Proffitt assistedthe Missouri General Assembly in making significant changes in the sub- stantive criminal law in that state. At Michigan, as Assistant Dean, Mr. Proffitt has taken over the administration duties hitherto performed by the secretary to the Law School, together with the handling ofthe scholarship and student aid program. His administrative duties at Michigan include the scheduling of classes and examinations, supervision ofthe scholarship and loan program, student discipline, serving as secretary ofthe Faculty, and local direction of the Law School Fund. He is co-editor of Statutes,Rules and Cases on Criminal Procedure. In addi- tion, he teaches a course in Criminal Law Areas. ,
