WC solid thumps resounded through the length of the Boeing 727. The pave- ment of Miami ran along under the belly until the lights at the end of the runway turned into buildings. His eyes darted, nervously checking the faces of the other passengers. He disembarked and strode into the flourescent lobby, following along behind hundreds of others with coats and baggage. The ad hoc parade finally terminated in the main lobby and the descent began. A deep, low hum of noise drummed through the floors as thousands of people wandered around like electrons bumping into each other. The carousel turned and turned until it finally gave him what he wanted. Bag in hand, the doors opened and he was assaulted by the thickness, the heaviness of the air rich with humidity. Going up and down the curbstones with his eyes, he surveyed the people waiting for ground transpor- tation. There were many with the same destination as his. 11 t. 1 alit a.rt -A 1
