FLORIDA 33125 orncr OF THE PIRESMENT Dear Graduating Seniors: This year ' s Itmeccming thane, Shades of Yesteryear, caused me to ponder how our graduating seniors this year will remember their university and their experience on this campus 25 years from now. Those of you who have been here the traditional four years, entered the University as the tempestuous ' 60s ended, a decade marked by swirling floodwaters of change. In my annual report for the year 1965-66 when student protest was gaining mcmentun, I remarked: ' Routh imparts to every generation a kind of pristine enthusiasm, a blessed naivete. The white charger is always there, waiting for youth to mount. And youth is always convinced that it will slay dragons, never tilt windmills. I am glad to observe now that our students of the ' 70s have lost none of their enthusiasn and they are still mounting white chargers, but with a different style. Instead of charging off in all directions on unbridled mounts, they seen to possess a maturity not shared by the more militant of the unsettled sixties. Students are still exhorting administrators, and administrators are listening, more closely, and more importantly, in a far better atmosphere of reason, good will, trust and cooperation. As you go forward in your respective careers, it is my hope that as the years add new experiences and greater maturity, you will remember with increasing nostalgia the learning years of your youth on this campus. And I hope you will want to return, each Homeccodng, to share with your fellow alumni and alumnae, the Shades of your Yesteryears here.
