Lc? Mat ma al !Pt !at- On a slightly more practical level, those who intend to live or work in or near any of the country ' s major cities cannot be unaware that the large and growing Latin population will soon make bilin- gualism the necessity elsewhere that it already is in Miami. I should be ashamed to point out such self-evident features of foreign language instruction were it not that the correspondence in the Hurricane displays a wide- spread lack of such elementary urxlerstanding. Much of what I have said will, of course, fall upon deaf ears; the current under- graduate student body had the misfortune to mature at a lime when rational thought was in dis- repute and when the for edu- cational was in lull swing. Unfortunately, the untutored mind does not know what is re- levant and what is not, and, childlike, tends to reacts for the pretty mental playthings rather than what is useful or purposeful. this tendency is sadly aggravated hete; independent observation bolstered by the attrition figures published in the Hurricane would suggest that a large part of the stu- dent body is composed of func- tional illiterates, byproducts of the mistaken notion that everybody is entitled to or in need of a college %. education, who are naturally hap. pier at the idea of training them- selves to think independently. My interest in the controversy. as I already posse ' s a BA drom a school with a two-year language requirement), and am now attend- ing the law School, is a further debased academic reputation for the college at large which will in- evitably affect the value of the dip- loma I receive. Even if the students cannot un- derstand the reasons for foreign language instruction, the faculty will hopefully remain steadfast and not, by acquiesence to de- mands for its cessation, lose a de- cisive battle against this school ' s tip too well deserted country club reputation.
