The University oe Miami has felt very strongly that education is the most important factor in bringing the peoples of the Americas into closer relations, each studying the history, the traditions, and the culture of the other, and so coming into a broader understanding of the problems which confront the peoples of the two continents. The plan to make this the Pan American university has been largely determined by reason of its location in the most southeastern part of the United States immediately adjacent to the West Indies and within easy reach of South America. The first step in this plan has been to offer courses in the Latin American Department covering the broad field of history, culture, development. and world position of the American republics with special reference to their relations with the United States. Courses have been added offering intensive training for representatives of American business houses in Latin American countries. The University this year offered fourteen separate courses in Latin American subjects. The faculty in this department has been recruited from Latin American countries. Future plans for the department include the bringing of students from various universities of Latin America to the University of Miami, and also the transfer of some students from Miami to Latin American institutions. The Pan American Union in Washington and Dr. L. S. Rowe. Director General of the Pan American Union, have given very helpful support and co-operation to the University in its Pan American program.
