LOWELL TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE Lowell Technological lnstitute, ori- gianlly Lowell Textile School, was incor- porated in 1895 and formally openned on January 30, 1897 for the purpose of in- struction in the theory and the practical art of textile and kindred branches of in- dustry. Due to its rapid growth in size, scope of curriculum, and prestige, the school was granted, in 1913, the right to confer 4 year degrees in textile engineer- ing and textile chemistry, whereas initial- ly the school awarded only certificates and diplomas. To indicate more fully the school's collegiate status, the name was changed to Lowell Textile Institute in 1928. Further growth lead to diversifica- tion in other areas of specialization, in- cluding an expansion in the engineering program, as well as programs in the pure sciences.
