LOWELL STA TE COLLEGE Lowell State College, originally the Massachusetts State Normal School at Lowell was established in January of 1984, by an act of the General Court of the Commonwealth. The institution, re- flecting the educational philosophy and objectives of the late 19th century, would provide a 2-year program in ele- mentary education, training students the most thorough knowledge of the branches of learning required ot be taught in schools, the best methods of teaching, and the right mental training. A 3-year program in education and music was established in 1912 and 1927 respectively, with the program of music education being extended to that of a 4- year program with the first baccalaure- ate degree granted in 1929. ln 1932, the institution was made a four year college and became State Teachers College at Lowell with the right to confer degrees in both music and elementary education. The college received permission in 1959 to offer curricula in secondary education and following year to initiate programs in liberal arts. From 1960 to 1967, the school was designated as the Massache- setts State College at Lowell and was later renamed Lowell State College. 18 FT'
