Memories Stir ln My Head About the only redeeming quality of an 8:CXJclassis that you have no trouble find- ing a parking space. You might even find one that's fairly free of broken glass. Pro- fessors probably like 8:00 classes less than students. Who 'd want to lecture to a class of yawning students, many of whom walk in late, and most of whom pay more attention to their coffee than the lec- ture? I'm lucky this morning. The lecture is being supplemented by slides. so I don't have to force myself to look awake and interested. Like the rest of the class, I slump back in my chair and sip my coffee. The first slide slips in and out of focus, as do my thoughts. With graduation only a semester away, I find I'm often caught in reflections on the past few years. lt's been almost four years since I re- ceived the Dear AppIicant form letter notifying me of my acceptance to ULowell. There's been so much fun, so much aggravation, so many late night pa- pers and studying marathons since then. I can still remember my first class, taught by the most humorous critic in the Eng- Iish Department. After his first class, I knew I was going to like it at ULowell. My high school classmates and I com- pared the atmosphere at ULowell to our high school. The freedom, the maturity and the responsible attitudes of the stu- dents impressed us. Coming from a high school that had treated jocks as demi- gods, we were pleased to find that ULowell's jocks were regular students with an athletic talent. It was a friendly Campus, and we liked it. My mind drifts back to the lecture. The professor recommends a book that can elucidate the slides we are viewing. I write the title into my notebook, as I al- ways do when a book is recommended. After three and a half years, l've got a long list of recommended readings, but I 've yet to read more than two or three of them. More slides are projected on to the screen. more memories stir in my head. I think what my friends and I will miss alot when we graduate is our club office in the SUB. lt's been a second home to us for a few years, and we've had many marathon study sessions there. lt's an ac- tive club, and it's given me a sense of being part of Campus life. Through the club, l've become more involved in Uni- versity affairs and l've gotten to know many professors outside the classroom. There is much more substance to my col- lege life than if I just attended class and went home. Of course, the club's been a source of frustration once in awhile, when there doesn't seem to be enough time to work on the activities, but the rewards outnumber the frustrations. We've had so much fun designing booths for Spring Carnival, and setting up the booths on dismal, rainy nights. We feel proud to be able to work with the English Department to give student input to the Department changes. We've worked hard to structure this club into a popular and respected organization, and we've suc- Tlm Gent 1 J.. f v ls 4-, 'E .af L E' 1,1 . .
