Janus, from Roman mythology, was the god of good endings. He was also the god of good beginnings, since the beginning of an undertaking has much influence on its success. He was represented as having two faces, one of youth or of beginning, the other of age or of ending. One door of his temple looked to the east where day begins, the other to the west where day ends. It is significant that these two aspects of beginning and ending were incorporated in the same deity, exemplifying the inseparable relationship of past and future. Mencius has said that education is the great and constant need of all minds and most especially of the mind of him who would lead others. Our beginning, four years ago, was directed towards securing this education. Now, at the end, like Janus, we turn the other way and look back to take the measure of the past. It has been devoted to a specialized training to make us good teachers, and to a broader education to make us men and women of integrity. Our future lies in educating others, and equally important, in the continued or constant education of ourselves that we be capable of this leadership. The education we have received and will continue to receive must inevitably influence directly those whom we lead. This influence will be as effective as the past which it reflects, inspiring as it will, leadership for the future.

Our President We look before and after And pine for what is not; Our sincerest laughter With some pain is fraught Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought! Shelley has thus poetically expressed, I hope, your feelings and mine, at the approach of commencement. I have a paternal feeling toward the Class of 1961, a mixed emotion of pride and sorrow, pride in the quality of your response to academic challenge, sorrow in the coming separation when, intellectually mature, you leave. May I, in loco parentis, wish all of you success and happiness in your future role in life , whatever it may be. May the clouds of life be big with mercy and break in blessings on your head. -?4 CO.
