To You. We Dedicate This Book Those who have torches will pass them on to others Plato The Class of 1961 takes great pride in dedicating this yearbook to an advisor of unusual merit, Dr. Patricia Goler. Over the past four years, she has been for each of us a teacher in the ancient and truest sense of the word. Her demanding and dedicated scholarship has won our highest respect, while her sincerity and genuine friendship have warranted both our affection and our admiration. Few are given that indefinable, selfless quality that marks a teacher with distinction. This, Dr. Goler possesses to a remarkable degree. With deepest gratitude, we dedicate- our yearbook to her.

Our President We look before and after And pine for what is not; Our sincerest laughter With some pain is fraught Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought! Shelley has thus poetically expressed, I hope, your feelings and mine, at the approach of commencement. I have a paternal feeling toward the Class of 1961, a mixed emotion of pride and sorrow, pride in the quality of your response to academic challenge, sorrow in the coming separation when, intellectually mature, you leave. May I, in loco parentis, wish all of you success and happiness in your future role in life , whatever it may be. May the clouds of life be big with mercy and break in blessings on your head. -?4 CO.

Our Advisor Throughout the ages of history as men have stood at the cross- roads, they have invoked their deities. Well might one imagine the Roman youth, have completed his studies and apprenticeship as he departed from Rome to assume his duties in Gaul, invoking the blessings of Janus: O Janus, praeses custosque collegii portarum, vobis relictis, hanc solam vitam quam novimus derelinquimus, dirigas clientes in semitis bonorum morum justitiaeque. Or the medieval cleric as he contemplates his commencement from the University of Paris might well pray: Omnipotens sempiterne Deus fac nos Tibi per vitam ita servire ut homines Te clarius cognoscant, carius ament, propius sequantur. You, also, stand at the threshold - about to enter a new way of life Well might your supplication be That all my actions may be directed to Thee and by Thy assistance be brought to a successful conclusion. Your college days are past, and if there have been hardships and disappointments through these years, they must now give way to your ultimate triumph. My own reaction to our association has been characterized by pride in your academic achievements, admiration of your spirit, respect for your integrity, joy in your success, love of your humanity, and perhaps a tinge of melancholy which must inevitably be present when friends say farewell. Civilization awaits you; mankind needs you; you CAN change the world! Area et thesaurus meus estis. Ipsi vos expend ite ut bene agatis. ZCs i 1 43L
