Four years ago an earnest graduate of Harvard and Simmons College School of Library Science came to Lowell Teachers College to take over the duties of li- brarian. His youngest students were members of the Class of ' 57, and under his guidance they grew toward mature and professional individuals. The students of this class felt the influence of this man and selected him their advisor. For four years he has been at the helm of the ' 57 ship, and has won the respect of all who have known the combination of synr pathetic understanding, clear insight, and subtle humoi in his personality. Truly he has taught us to strive, hold cheap the strain, for the best is yet to be. With deep humility and just pride we say, Thank you, Mr. Joyce. PROF. WILLIAM D. JOYCE Mr. Joyce was always available for advice when we needed it. Here he talks with Ann Shugrue, Judy Miller, Bob Molleur, Pauline Bergeron, Bob Armstrong and Jocelyn Greene. 8

Above we see the two cute causes of Mr. Joyce ' s apolo- TO THE CLASS OF 1957 We have, you and I, come to the open sea after four years of travelling down the river symbol- ized in the theme of this year ' s Knoll — a river traversing your college undergraduate life. We have shared the calm placid reaches of the academic stream where our journey was easy and pleasant, and we have shared the rapids and cataracts where the going was hazardous and trying. Now, when the swirling current of the river mingles with the deep surge of the ocean — the world outside our ivied walls — we prepare to part. As in most leave-takings, this one has elements of both sadness and happiness combined in it. I am happy that your goal in coming to Lowell State Teachers College has been attained, but my pleasure is tempered with the knowledge that we must now go our separate ways, and that the experience I have enjoyed so deeply must come to an end. For both of us, however, this is really only another beginning. You are about to embark on your new career, perhaps the finest open to anyone — that of teacher to the young. As a librarian, I, or my colleagues, will continue to serve you in your new undertaking. I, therefore, take my leave of you now knowing that you will continue to grow in wisdom and understanding and looking forward to the time when we will meet once more. iUl£Ci y«
