DANIEL H. O ' LEARY President Lowell State Teachers College You have chosen as your theme The Merrimack River. Is it be- cause to you the river symbolizes life itself from its birth in the hills until its end in the bosom of the eternal deep? Or do you envisage the spread of education from its origins at the Pierian and Kastalian springs flowing through the centuries until it reaches the infinite sea of wisdom whose final depths are yet unplumbed by questing men? Or is it because the river symbolizes the teacher who carries the swell- ing waters of learning to increasing multitudes and whose influence cleanses the souls and nourishes the minds of succeeding generations? May you, like the river, grow in depth and wisdom through the coming years. D. H. O ' Leary

Four years ago an earnest graduate of Harvard and Simmons College School of Library Science came to Lowell Teachers College to take over the duties of li- brarian. His youngest students were members of the Class of ' 57, and under his guidance they grew toward mature and professional individuals. The students of this class felt the influence of this man and selected him their advisor. For four years he has been at the helm of the ' 57 ship, and has won the respect of all who have known the combination of synr pathetic understanding, clear insight, and subtle humoi in his personality. Truly he has taught us to strive, hold cheap the strain, for the best is yet to be. With deep humility and just pride we say, Thank you, Mr. Joyce. PROF. WILLIAM D. JOYCE Mr. Joyce was always available for advice when we needed it. Here he talks with Ann Shugrue, Judy Miller, Bob Molleur, Pauline Bergeron, Bob Armstrong and Jocelyn Greene. 8
