TO Hon. SAMUEL M. SHOEMAKER Chairman oi the Board of Regents OF THE University of Maryland Ji? Kecoguitiou and in Honor of His Long and Untiring Seriicc for the Public Good of the State of Maryland, this Nineteen Twenty- Seven Volume of the Reveille is Dedicated. A United States Senator once said that a man really becomes great when everybody begins to call him by his first name. Whether or not that be true of greatness of accom- plishment, certainly no truer measure may be found of how well a man stands in the public esteem. And if there is one man who is, and should be, known for what he has done for others, that man is Samuel M. Shoemaker, and it is as Sam Shoemaker that he is known to the people of Maryland. As a member of the Baltimore County School Board for twenty-five years, now Chairman of that Board, as progenitor of Maryland ' s system of good roads, as first Presi- dent of the State-wide coalition of agricultural organizations, as Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Maryland, the imprint of his efforts is deep and broad. No man has done more for his State. The students of this University consider it an honor to give this recognition to the man who is devoting his life to the public welfare of Maryland.
