Biochemists apparently feel nothing of the overwhelming sensa- tion that descends on the first-year medi- cal student as he fills notebooks with geometrical jungles of formulae that mo- mentarily cross the blackboard; or spends hours before the long, black benches, dis- tilling solutions in double-jointed glass apparatus, deciphering unknown powders and permanently coloring his fingertips and trousers.
