THE ADMINISTRATION THROUGH THE YEARS. . . The University of Maryland School of Nursing, the second such school to be founded in the state, was organized in 1889 by Louisa Parsons, a student of Florence Nightingale. In 1902, the original two year curriculum was extended to three years. In 1920, the school became a separate unit of the University, although it continued to be administered as a hospital school. Six years later, a five year combined academic and nursing program was instituted. However, in May, 1952, a four year program was organized, a Dean appointed, and faculty members accorded academic status. By this action the School of Nursing became a separate college in the University offering a curriculum leading to a B.S. degree in Nursing. Following this, the School of Nursing became a department of the graduate school in March, 1954. These years of experience in adminis- tration, plus ample appreciation of the role of the nurse contrived from per- sonal experience, have endowed the President Wilson H.
