Withjustifiable pride does our school ofnursing function under the outstanding leader- ship and guidance of Dean Gipe. Her record is a testimony of her admirable abilitiesg she has held various high administrative positions encompassing both nursing service and nurs- ing education. As a teacher she has instructed at both the York Hospital School of Nursing and at Providence Hospital School of Nursing. After having already served as the Director of York Hospital, as Director of Nursing Education at the Reading Hospital School of Nursing, and as Director of the School of Nursing at Maryland General Hospital. Dr. Gipe then came to University Hospital as the Director of Nursing Service and Nursing Educa- tion, While in this position she was instrumental in developing a nationally accredited collegiate nursing program here. Thus, in 1952. this School of Nursing became a college within the University of Maryland. Though active in many professional organizations. it has been especially through her work with the Southern Regional Educational Board and the Graduate School of the University that Dean Gipe has been responsible for the initia- tion and development of graduate curricula leading to the Master of Science degree in Nursing. ln addition to holding membership in an impressive array of scholastic and pro- fessional honorary societies. Dr. Gipe has received many commendations from various community groups and civic organizations on behalf of her worthy contributions. through nursing education, to the improvement of nursing care rendered to patients. Certainly her outstanding administrative skills, creative initative. and sincere dedication have in great measure advanced the nursing profession, in theory. scope. and practice. To her goes our gratitude for having provided and perfected for us one of the best undergraduate programs in the science art of professional nursing. St
