. . . and in presenting to you Mary Hardin-Baylor College, it must first establish for you that which is MH-B. MH-B is a small Baptist college, dedicated primarily to the education of women. It was established in 1845 as the Female Department of Baylor University at Independence, then known as the Athens of Texas. In 1866, forty years after the college opened its doors for the first time, Baylor Female College received its separate charter from the state of Texas. Twenty years after the formal division of the Male and Female Departments of the school, both were moved from their original site, the Female College being relocated in Belton and the University reopening the following year in con- solidation with Waco University in Waco. Both Mary Hardin-Baylor College and Baylor University were named in honor of Judge Robert Emmet Bledsoe Baylor, Baptist layman and district court judge of early Texas. A gift presented in 1934 by John and Mary Hardin of Burkburnett which enabled the struggling school to survive prompted col- lege officials to add Mary Hardin to the already existing name of Baylor College making the school MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR COLLEGE. f'.
