jUST WHAT the ideal dean slgculd say to the average graduate, I have been trying for six years to discover. My search has proved as fruitless as the search for the elusive ratio decidendi . Perhaps it is because I am certainly not the ideal dean, and you are, of course, not merely the average graduate. I will not attempt to advise. For what advice could I without impertinence give, that has not already been given by more capable counsellors. May I, however, remind you while you are still on the threshold of your chosen field of study that there perhaps more than in any other field Pope's words should be heeded: A little learning is a dangerous thing Drink deep or taste not the Pierian spring Page I6O I I G. P. R. Tallin K.C., B.A., LLB. Dean of Law School There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain And drinking largely sobers us again. I congratulate you, to whom the term graduate may prove to be appropriate, that you have achieved an intermediate goal, have acguired at least a minimum of equip- ment for the pursuit of what further aims you may have set for yourselves. I congratulate you, too, that you are beginning your service in times when the need for men of wisdom, courage, integrity and learning has never been greater. I hope and believe that you will acquit your- selves with honour and distinction. Your happiness and success must depend in large measure on your own efforts, yet none the less I wish you Goodbye not merely in the conventional but in the real sense of the word.
