llni ersit chnlarship For Ma,nz'toba W ar Veterans and their Sons and Daughters The six licensed Manitoba Brewers and all the licensed Hotelkeepers in the Province have otfered 3515.000 to the University of Manitoba to provide scholarships for Manitoba War Veterans not otherwise adequately provided for and for the sons and daughters of Manitoba War Veterans. The Trustees of Manitoba Brewers and I-lotelmen's Welfare Fund offer thirty Scholar- ships to be held in the academic year 1951-52. Fifteen entrance Scholarships of the value of Sl50.00 each have been provided for students resident in Greater Winnipeg and for students resident in Brandon who attend Brandon College, and fifteen Entrance Scholar- ships of the value of 35350.00 each for other students resident in Manitoba. The Scholar- ships may be continued. with the same value, for a second year, subject to the satisfactory progress of the holder in the tirst year of studies. The scholarships may be tenable for two years in the University of Manitoba, or in any of its afhliated Colleges, in Arts. Science, Law. Medicine. Engineering, Architecture, Agriculture, Home Economics, Commerce, Pharmacy or other courses approved by the Board of Selection. To be eligible a student must have clear Grade XI or Grade XII standing or better, provided that any student writing Grade XI examinations may apply. Application forms may be obtained from any hotelkeeper, high school principal, the Department of Education or the Registrar of the University of Manitoba. BOARD OF SELECTION The HON. MR. JUSTICE A. UR forefathers, in developing this country, planted deep the roots of their convic- tions. Personal liberty, freedom of thought and free enterprise have been jealously guarded throughout the years. The success of our Democratic institutions is dependent upon an intelligent, informed citizinery, capable of meeting the responsi- bilities of leadership with aggressiveness and realistic vision. Such men may be found in all walks of life, but one of the most fruitful sources should be the products of our Universities. The services, as do other institutions, re- quire the abilities of the best, both politically and technically, and turn to undergraduates for possible officer material. An eventual goal is presented of either a career in the Services, or a commissioned rank in the Reserves while pursuing a civilian career. The University Naval Training Division offers to potential Naval Officers sixty hours Page 3078 T Lieut.-Cmdr. L. S. Bennett of training during the academic year, which is represented by one evening of each week between the months of October and March. During two summers, twelve to sixteen weeks of reguired training is taken in Naval estab- lishments and in ships at the Coast. The majority of students, however, elect to take advantage of extending their training to the full five months which is offered at attractive rates of pay. As Cadets graduate from University, having satisfactorily completed their Naval training program, they are ad- vanced to commissioned rank. In the past, Canadian youth has made for itself a memorable record in the Naval Service. By such a program as is extended through Cadet training, Canada expects to have a nucleus of trained personnel prepared to offer leadership to the community as a citizen or, should the necessity arise, to the people of Canada as an officer.
