The tense international situation has given new emphasis and direction to our training and has high- lighted its importance in the scheme of national defence and national preparedness. Among the innovations introduced this year was a tactical exercise on a battalion level carried out at Birds Hill and revisions in the Theoretical Phases. There were also important changes in personnel. ln September, 1950, Major R. A. Rodgers, who had served as Resident Staff Officer since 1948, was nomi- nated to attend the Gunnery Staff Course in the United Kingdom. He was succeeded by Major G. D. Mitchell, M.C., who is a graduate of Royal Military College and McGill University. During the war Major Mitchell served with the R.C.H.A. in the United Kingdom and Italy. He was attached to the P.P.C.L.1. as a Naval Bombardment Officer during the landings in Sicily. On November 8th, 1950, Lt. Col. G. P. R. Tallin, Commanding Officer since 1945, was retired from the Canadian Army and handed over his command to Lt. Col. 1. B. Rollitt. Colonel Rollit qualified for his commission in the McGill C.O.T.C. and was commis- sioned in the 17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars in 1929. ln 1931, on the re-organization of the 6th Duke of Connaught's Royal Canadian Hussars, he was promoted to Captain, second-in-command C Squadron. He went overseas as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Intelligence Corps in 1942 and served with A as ro Poge 304 the First Canadian Division and Headquarters First Canadian Corps. At the end of the war he was Lieuten- ant-Colonel in charge of Supervision and Plans for the Repatriation Rehabilitation Training Program On the occasion of Col. Tallin's retirement, a hand- over ceremony was held in the Officers' Mess at Fort Osborne Barracks. The guests included: Lt. Col., The Honorable R. F. McWilliams, Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, the first Commanding Officer of the Con- tingentg the President of the University, Dr. A. H. S. Gillsong Brigadier R. E. A. Morton, D.S.O., LL.D, General Officer Commanding, Prairie Command: Lt.- Col. W. F. Riddell, Commanding Officer from 1938 to 19415 Lt.-Col. R. O. MacFarlane, Deputy Minister of Education, and a Contingent Officer from 1946 to 1950. On behalf of all the Contingent, the Adjutant, Capt. W. Kristjanson, presented a silver service tray to Col. Tallin. The Lieutenant-Governor presented military certificates to the qualified Officer Cadets who are listed on the opposite page. Since the inception of the new C.O.T.C. programme in 1946, the Contingent has qualified 61 Captains and 96 Lieutenants. ln 1950, the Contingent sent 166 Officer Cadets to Corps Schools across Canada. Five more Officer Cadets have joined the Active Force and four have joined the new Special Force. The Second Tri-Service Cadet Ball was held at H.M.C.S. Chippewa in November, 1950. Our fellow servicemen of the U.N.T.D. deserve credit for the success of this Ball which has become an annual social event.
