In the long run, a college establishes itself upon the consistency of the repute of its graduates. Working very closely with the public, perhaps teachers colleges and their degree graduates are in a more sensitive posi- tion than some other types of professional schools. Further complicating this particular situation is the fact that there is wide variance in the types of institutions prepar- ing teachers, philosophies, and the ways chosen to implement objectives which may be fairly common in nature. Coupled with these factors is the problem of establishing a closer relationship between able scholars and the work of the professional field teacher. As you begin to assume the position of one who must accept the responsibilities of guid- ing the formal educational experience of others, the perplexing decisions of 'how,' 'what,' 'how much,' and 'to what purpose' will be yours to face in your own wisdom. This will be involved further by the great variety of backgrounds, abilities, and motiva- tions ol students in a general classroom. It will be here that the worth of basic principle will emerge. Perhaps, for our day, the goal suggested by President Gardiner of the Car- negie Foundation continues to be most ap- propriate: VVe must seek excellence in a context of concern for all.
