comfersatzons wztla betsy pan or short my mothers just crazy about james barr1e and everyth1ng that he wrote so s my grandmother my mothers mother that IS and my grandmother named my mother wendy and so when my mother marrred my father whose name IS peter well they called my older SISICI belle Cafter txnker belle except now everyone has to call her bella w1th the accent over thee that makes lf sound l1ke an a she th1nks lf s 1tal1an and terr1bly romanncj my s1sters at that romantxc age shes 17 and wants to be 1ta11an or french more than anyth1ng mostly 1tal1an though whenever my father gets annoyed w1th her he says 1f you were french or 1tal1an young lady you wouldn t be here r1ght now no s1r no SIICC bob fmy father gets rather babb1ty sometrmes 1 mean he doesn t belong to any boosters pep club or anyth1ng but once 1n a wh1le you d probably be starv1ng1n a war orphanage or off 1n some god forsaken convent do1ng retreats and penances my father doesn t approve of convents very muchj well anyway they just had to call me pan 1 mean they d1dn t really lf was just a baby name no one calls me that now except me as a matter of fact lf s really el1sabeth my name that IS after my paternal grandmother she has scads and scads of money and my father says someone m1ght as well get lt well maybe not scads but about 7 or 8 thousand dollars just ly1ng around 1n the chase manhattan bank thats the bank that has the advert1sements 1n the new yorker about your nest egg you know and how 1f you keep lf 1n the chase manhattan bank you dont have to keep lf w1th you all the t1me and they have these huge 1 mean really tremendous gold eggs cha1ned to someones arm or leg or someth1ng well anyway thats where she has her money my grandmother 1 mean and 1f she doesn t leave lf to us she ll leave lt to the museum of modern art or someth1ng 1 mean 1 m all for the museum of modern art but my lord 7 or 8 thousand dollars lt m1ght as well be someone 1n the fam1ly but thats why 1 m called el1sabeth only everyone calls me betsy lt seems sort of funny once 1n a wh1le not to be called wendy or anyth1ng 1 mean my brothers names are john and m1chael Cthats after john and m1chael banks rn peter pan of coursej my brothers are IWIHS and we call them the boys wh1ch 15 l1ke peter pans gang of boys my brothers are 16 and very proud of lf me 1 m amazed that they managed to last thrs long but anyway someone has to get that money so they p1cked me my mother says that when 1 was born 1 had a whole head of ha1r and looked to be a very determ1ned ch1ld and s1nce 1 was the youngest ch1ld 1 m 15 they dec1ded that 1 m1ght as well be the prod1gal son or whatever lf 15 my parents aren t cruel or anyth1ng though 1 mean they dont make me wr1te letters or anyth1ng to my grandmother they just dec1ded lf would be good 1nsurance or someth1ng but they d1dn t glVC me a m1ddle name or anyth1ng 1 can choose my own m1ddle name belles IS margaret and whenever shes rn a terr1bly french mood my father calls her belle marguer1te my brothers m1ddle names are peter and dav1d john peter and mrchael dav1d except we usually call them the boys IIS rather n1ce to know that you w1ll be able to PlCk your own name but you can call me pan 1 mean thats what IIS go1ng to be my name that IS when 1 m famous 1 m not qu1te sure exactly what 1 m go1ng to do yet 1 was th1nk1ng about p1ano but 1 cannot stand pract1c1ng well 1 really dont hate ll but 1 cer ta1nly dont th1nk 1t s the most fasc1nat1ng th1ng 1n the world 1m not very good at art so 1 d only be able to do terr1bly advanced th1ngs and even then 1 couldn t expla1n the mes sage 1 write wonderful englrsh themes and 1 was consrder 1ng that but just the other day 1 had the most wonderful 1dea 1 m go1ng to be an actress' 1 mean 1 m ID the dramat1c club at school and 1 was hamlet IH our last play Crt s an all g1rls school and everyone sa1d 1 was just marvelous and wouldn t lt look terrrlic up 1n l1ghts 1 mean wouldn t rt really? but anyway you can call me pan CATHA WINN Elevenzb Grade Summer Chapel On the southern end of Nantucket Island IS the vrllage ot Sconset Formerly a fishmg vxllage lf IS now a beloved sum mer parad1se to numerous people throughout the Unrted States All m1ngle dur1ng the week and on Sunday they are aga1n together 1n a small 1nter denom1nat1onal church the UHIOH Chapel The Chapel IS gray sh1ngled and covered w1th roses and honeysuckle A slender wh1te steeple ascends the heavens from one end of the trad1t1onally cross shaped bu1ld1ng As you enter the church the peacefulness of IES soft pale green walls and wh1te sashed nave pervades to the deepest corner of your soul You take a seat on one of the wooden benches and not1ce the worn old hymn books IH thelr faded red covers There are no sta1ned glass w1ndows but wh1te shutters open1ng out onto the churchyard let 1n golden slants of sunsh1ne Although there lS no cho1r If 15 not m1ssed because the shutters also let 1n the tw1tter1ng and ch1rp1ng b1rds rest1ng 10 the honeysuckle In the left transept there IS a p1ano the sole accompan1ment to the hymn sxng 1ng the r1ght transept contarns more pews Then 1n the m1ddle l1es a small green carpeted platform w1th a shallow step where the people kneel to recelve Com mun1on On the ma1n platform there IS a s1mple wh1te and gold altar wlth sllm s1lver vases filled w1th wlld flowers gathered from the nearby moors Above lf IS an unadorned gold cross and above that 1n gold letters are the words Behold how pleasant lt rs for brethren to dwell together ln un1ty jump.
