In our new catalogue whxch IS tltled Thls Is Llggett School and whlch tells the stranger who M w1shes to be mtroduced or the alumna who w1shes to be brought up to date all she w1shes to know 1n dellght ful and eflectlve fashlon, there IS an Important double page w1th plctures and captlons called It s Llggett Tradltxon to I wonder lf any oth school cares about tts tradxtxons as Lxggett does or has as many' They are, ofcourse partlcularly dear to the semors who have experlenced the annual events for all the years they have been 1n school and who have looked forvw ard to thexr Hnal year and the specxal events whlch honor thelr achlevements Before school begms they make thexr plans for the redecoratlon of the Senlor Room, w h1ch each year IS patnted and draped accordmg to the class color and the art1st1c w1shes of each group Thxs t1ght httle corner for senlors only 1S one of the most prlzed prlvlleges of each senxor class To remmlsce a mlnutc, the begmmngs of the senxor room prlvllege were 1n my first years when the walls of all the rooms and all the furmture were gray One sen1or s father who was IH the paint busmess offered to supply enough of the best blue palnt for the chalrs m Nltss West s room The glrls d1d a good job of put tmg II on The next fall I put another set of gray pa1nted green Etc There was even the year that a sen1or father from L Hudson s Intertor Decoratmg Department came out and personally superv1sed the decor of Room 117 But now when school beglns the seniors hold thelr class meetmgs 1n the l1v1ng room at 2501 Burns, where the mformal atmosphere helps to strengthen class KATHARINE OGDEN un1ty It IS there that the xmportant decxsxons about a talent show and a class skung tr1p are made for mstance Week by week, ram or shme, snow or mud, B A Vassar College Ph D UHIVCFSHY Of 111111015 xt IS an xmportant half hour of fellowshlp and class plans Headmzstrers cy' the Lzggett School In early November, after a dmner IH the school dmmg room, the semors assemble ln the l1v1ng room of my home thls t1me weartng hose and heels and slttmg on chatrs rather than on the floor to decxde on their motto Each class has had 1ts own motto smce the first group of sm who graduated IH 1881 and chose under Grace IN hltney s leadershlp Semper plus ultra, Calways more beyondb To most members of each class the motto becomes one of the symbols of thetr llfe at Llggett School It IS Llggett tradltlon for the sen1or class to elect one of tts members to QIVC the Presldent s Thanksglvlng proclamatton and to choose from 1ts membershlp the madonna for the Chrtstmas tableau And to close our beautlful Chrlstmas and Easter programs It IS tradltlon for the senlors to smg from the l1brary the Vassar College benedtctlon Peace I leave with you It IS even trad1t1on for me to approve the tempo and dtstlnctness IH rehearsal though 1t has now been Lxggett School s benedlctton for so long that anyone else would be as crmcal as I Almost as lmportant as graduatlon xtself IS Rmg Ceremony, whlch comes when three quarters of the sen1or year IS behmd us so credlts are assured and the rlght to wear the beautxful symbol of alumnaehood has been won It IS an mtl mate occaston for the semors, thelr parents and thelr teachers, and one of our dearest tradlttons The crowmn of a semor Ma ueen chosen b the U er School and her enthronement w1th two semor attendants S Y 1 Y PP 1 chosen by thelr classmates, IS part of a tradmon that goes back to 1927 Wxth the rest of her court she presldes over the program 1n the transformed gymnaslum, crowded wrth the enttre school and our guests The Jeannette M Llggett Hxstory Award whtch IS resented to a sen1or at the close of the ceremonxes IS a rather recent addmon but nevertheless a PFCCIOUS moment o t at appy ay pf h h d ' Fmally we come to Slng Out, when each sen1or class smgs tts farewell to the younger classes, to the xvxed walls and to the mtangxble spxrlt whxch IS Llggett School Dressed IH hard to find but lovely to look at whtte dresses the class moves us to tears and happy prlde On graduatlon our spec1al tradltxons are that two daughters of alumnae hold the dxplomas and that two ststers of the graduates lead the school onto the platform and to thexr places Some of these trad1t1ons go far back 1nto hlstory, some are more recent Some are htgh potnts, others are part of the routme of sen1or year All are dear to us All are Llggett School and woe to her who trxes to change one of them ln any small detall' 4 'Gg-SAW, . . . ,S . , .. , f . ,, .
