Sl w ep A lm A HE OTHER EVENING as I was walkmg near school I had such a strange and mterestmg experxence that I should l1ke to tell you about xt I was passing a house whxch I dld not remember ever havmg seen before It was made of whlte marble, and as I looked xt seemed to have a stone floor and many tall slender columns I thought I could see even a foun tam playmg at the back Whxle I was puzzlmg about the appearance of such a bulldmg ln our nelghborhood a glrl ln long flowing robes came qulckly toward me Her haxr hung about her shoulders and as she moved I could see all the colors of the rainbow xn her clothing When she came near she spoke to me You are the headmnstress of Lnggett School are you not? sand the glrl I am Ins and am sent by Juno to ask lf you wnll come to a councxl meetmg to answer some of our questlons Turnxng she led me xnto the marble hall and toward the fountain Presently I could see a group of women slttxng on low stools ln a clrcle and could hear thelr voxces whxch sounded as lf they were m dxsagreement Irxs led me to one who seemed kmdly and gentle as I looked mto her face Vesta here IS Mlss Ogden my gulde saxd The conversatlon stopped and Vesta rxsmg and holdmg out her hand drew me to a vacant stool Slt here wxth us a few moments she saxd We are argulng about which one of us shall be guardlan of Lxggett School Looklng around the clrcle I recogmzed several of the strangers One wore a crown and was queenly in her bow and arrow I knew for Dlana One who sat rather quxet wxth lxttle to say yet was beautlful beyond all the others I decided must be Venus And then I spied Mmerva wlth her gray eyes and serlous expressxon and wxth a serpent twmed about her arm Juno spoke fxrst We are mterested m Lxggett School One of us IS to be :ts guardxan Of course xt should be I Queen of the Gods Then Vesta spoke ln a qulet volce but firmly Lxggett glrls are prxmarlly mterested ln being home makers They should belong to me smce I am Goddess of Hearth and Home Bah' sald Dlana standmg up They are stall glrls m school Later they wlll have their homes Now they are concerned wlth sports If they are mme I shall help them ln their athletlc contests I shall glve my wreaths to the swlftest and to those who show the best sportsmanship They should be mme' Nay said beautlful Venus I have watched them a long tlme I have seen them ln the winter wearmg whlte skxrts and pastel sweaters I have seen them at thexr dances wearmg long graceful dresses and wlth flowers m thelr halr I have seen them ln the sprmg when they have a queen and her prmcesses Truly there can be no doubt They belong to me Goddess of Beauty Mmerva wazted tlll lt was her turn to speak though I could tell she was xmpatlent You do not know them very well she sald speakmg slowly Have you ever watched them ln their everyday clothes and on ordinary days? They are serious about learnmg They want to know and understand They are fazr mmded m thelr d1scuss1ons and often show dlscretlon far beyond their years It IS to me Goddess of Wisdom that the Llggett gxrls belong And as I pondered what each had saud suddenly I was no longer ln the marble hall but on the dark street agam Perhaps It was just a vxslon and yet I wonder' There lS a Spmt of Llggett I thmk I have seen her w1th an almost angelic qualxty at the Christmas exercises I thmk she comes to the hockey and basketball games and f1lls the players wxth the love of good clean sport I have caught fleetmg glimpses of her helplng to plan RIVISTA encouragmg Symmathetea as they achieve beauty and lllusxon on the stage I have seen her hoverlng around the dmmg room generously encourag ng warm hearted fnendlmess Guests who v1s1t us often say to me that they qulckly sense the splrlt of the school They feel her presence though they may be wlth us only a very short tlme So whether she be more llke Venus or like Diana or Vesta or Mmerva she IS the spmt of Llggett School, and to her I am sure we owe much of our happmess and good fortune 5.11 Safe-V Ml at N 9 3 s hx T Q .X - V , I F J' I , if f' If 5 p - ,, , , , y . px lsr- 'H ', I pf. , V , 2 f X Z iq gfv' 1- ' ,' 1 4 .
