The designers, Beth Ann Jewell and Georgeann Rosenberg, chose Secretariat as a symbol for UK, Lexington, and the yearbook struggling to come out on top. The colors were chosen as a change from the past four black and navy blue Kentuckian covers. Magazine design for the logo, flag, and cover stories were considered.
