Our deans are human. They understand student needs and the student mind. Administrative excellence is their by-word. They know that UK is growing, both physically and mentally, and look forward to the day when their spheres of guidance will be even futher extended. As the University grows, our deans will grow with it, ever mindful of academic progress. MARTIN M. WHITE Heading the largest college on the campus PS the task of Dr. White — and he does it magnificently. Prior to his appointment as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences last year, he was acting personnel di- rector, associate dea i of the college, and head of the psychology depart- ment. He IS the author of articles on emotional responses, president of the Kentucky Psychology Association and the Kentucky Council for the Handi- capped, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Phi Eta Sigma. ELVIS J. STAHR Named this year as the dean of the College of Law, Elvis Stahr soon distinguished himself in that capacity by being picked as one of The na- tion ' s outstanding young men by the National Junior Chamber of Com- merce. Only 33 years old, he is the youngest dean of an American law school. He is a native Kentuckian and a graduate of UK, where he was the top student leader. A past Rhodes Scholar, he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa, His achievements, Presi- dent Donovan once said, read like the biography of a genius. CECIL C. CARPENTER A University graduate and native Kentuckian, Dr. Carpenter was made dean of the College of Commerce only this year. He has been a UK staff member since 1 936. Formerly he was professor of economics at Marshall College and during the war, an economist for the Office of Ec- onomic Mobilization in Washington, D.C. His writings have appeared In Ihe Southern Economic Journal, the American Economic Review, The Ac- counting Review and other leading professional lournals. Well-known among businessmen and bankers of the state, he has organized programs for summer Bankers Conferences since 1938. LOUIS A. PARDUE Dr. Pardue succeeded the late, be- loved Dr. Funkhouser as dean of the Graduate School this year. Born at Scottsville, Ky., he is a UK graduate of 1925. He has studied at Yale, vhe California Institute of Technology, and the University of California. Dr. Pardue is one of the physicists who engaged in the development of the atomic bomb. During the war he was active in many important govern- mental proiects. He is a Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. Like Dr. Funk- houser, Dr. Pardue has long had a keen interest m developing UK ' s athletic program. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Athletics Association tince it was formed.
