66 hat is an universit ? A university is .. . 9' The 1911! KI-INTUCKIANI takes as its theme the re- nowned definition of a university as made by our re- tired President Frank L. McVey. For twenty-three years Dr. McVey served the University and the State off Kentucky. During those twenty-three years, the Uni- versity has grown from an institution of several hun- dreds to an institution of several thousands of stu- dents. Dr. McVey has built the University to conform to his ideas ofa university as set forth in his definition. According to him, The essences of this definition are men off learning and a spirit that is freeg books and equipmentg earnest and eager studentsg belief in truthg protesting against errorg and a burning desire to lead men by reason, rather than by force. I hope that we have recorded the University as Dr. McVey dehned one and as he has made the Univer- sity of Kentucky. -T1-Ir: Enrrou OF' 'SD DIV, 9 ' g as O ff 4 . .-i i:f'., .0 , 15. , UNITEQ VULQ EQ Ccct-
