Don't ever, ever ask Dr. Dunn when the EKG computor will be working. 2. Don't take a medicine module and try to work on the yearbook staff and hope to get a superior. 3. Don't study on the floor,. .even if you have nothing to do and no patients. Review charts, walk back and forth in the halls, order a serum asphault,. .do anything,. .just look busy. 4. Don't talk to your girlfriend when Dr. Hoogstraten is talking to her at the Jigger. 5. Don't worry about getting enough sleep. You can always catch a nap during the noon conference. 6. Don't ask your resident to start an I.V.Keep on torturing the poor bastard until you get it going,. .no matter how many times you have to poke him. 7. Don't leave the floor until your resident does. Stay even if you have nothing to do. 8. Don't miss rounds,. .that means pre-round rounds, morn- ing rounds, work rounds, chart rounds, quarter pound of ground rounds, grand rounds, merry-go-rounds, house staff rounds, Howdie rounds, Row Row Flow Your Boat Rounds, and fluid and electrolyte rounds. 9. Don't plan to catch a nap on 3-A without telling your resident that you're going to some obscure sub-specialty con- ference which go on at all hours of the day. 10. Don't ever answer a yes-no type question by admit- ting that you don't know. You have a fifty-fifty chance of getting the right answer so just blurt it out as if you know what you're talking about. A wrong answer isn't any worse than an l don't know. 11. Don't get discouraged if you happen to be the fifth per- son to do a history and physical on a patient. Try to keep your interest and enthusiasm up even though there are ten students on your service and there are only five patients to go around. Just understand that this deterioration in the quality of the clinical education at KUMC has been going on for a number of years and there is nothing you can do to make it change. So just keep your chin up and try to keep from screaming. 12. Don't complain that you aren't seeing enough patients. Most of the faculty will say it gives you a unique opportunity to study the patients you have in a greater depth..a real in- teresting study when your only patient in the last week is in for his yearly check up.
