Before putting pen to paper i leafed through some previous volumes of your publication and read the messages inscribed therein by my three immediate predecessors. One cannot fail to be impressed by what these men wrote and I urge you, too, to re-read their remarks. You have been privileged to be students in the Uni- versity of Kansas School of Medicine during the period of its greatest and most vigorous growth. You have been the heart of this school in the days when it grew From being one of many to the point where it has be- come the focus of national and international attention. You have lived in an atmosphere where construction has practically been the watchworcl; during your resi- dence you have seen our school double its physical dimensions. Your school has never been stronger. We are enter- ing a period, of necessity, where physical growth will come more slowly and where the gains of the last few years will become more firmly consolidated. Academ- ically, of course, spiritually and research-wise, growth will continue apace. This school, yours and mine, has drawn alert young men to its faculty from all ports of the country. They are the ones to whom you must look for the continued advancement of your Alma Mater. They have with them a Chancellor cognizant as no other can be of the needs of your school. The future looms ever brighter. I pledge to you that the School of Medicine will con- tinue in the front ranks and continue to be a place of which you can be justifiably proud. All that can be asked of you is that you follow your profession with honor and wisdom so that it may be said of each of you: This is the good physician. Good luck-and may God be with you. W. Clarke Wescoe
