Franklin D. Murphy-M.D. When a young man is asked to peer into the future, he frequently does so without fully recognizing that the future in no small measure depends upon the past and the present. What is the foundation on which we can hope to build for the future. In a sense it can be said that our medical school is entering into a new generation, for more than forty years have elapsed since the establishment of a four-year med- ical school at the University of Kansas. In retrospect, the accomplishments of that small band of founders seem truly prodigious in the light of the handicaps and strug- gles associated with their efforts. The handsome physical plant and, more importantly, the scores of graduates of the Kansas Medical School who have made outstanding names for themselves in the field of medicine stand as a tribute to the Vision, vigor, enthusiasm, ability and un- swerving determination of that group of men, who can truly be called fathers of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Those younger ones of us who have been handed the responsibility for carrying forward the torch of aca- demic medicine in this medical school can continually take strength and courage from those men and certainly with all humility, we can say, uWell done? Today the University of Kansas School of Medicine stands as a first-class institution of medical learning. Under its influence come yearly many young men and women in all branches of medical activity, and from it each year are disgorged the finished productsethe doc- tors, the nurses, and the many types of medical technical personneleto care for the health needs of the people of Kansas and this great Mid-Western area. It is providing postgraduate medical training yearly for hundreds of doctors. Members of its faculty are participating in- creasingly in many fields of medical research. Truly the University of Kansas School of Medicine is a going and effective institution. But we must ask ourselves the ques- 9
