UNI ER ITY OF ILLI OI A UMN ASS CIATIO More than 19,000 dues-paying members make the University of Illinois Alumni Association one of the largest such organizations in the United States. Besides alumni business, the Association takes an active interest i11 student affairs. It works closely with Illini Union Student Ac- tivities in sponsoring such events as Homecoming, class reunions, and other occasions for returning alumni. Four student representatives, chosen by petition and interview, are members of the Board of Directors. This practice fosters better student-alumni relations. Students are encouraged to join the As- sociation even before they receive their degrees. The Alumni Association conducts many valuable projects for both the University and its alumni. One of the biggest services is keeping Iiles of addresses and information on most alumni. Occasionally the Association sponsors the production of a movie concerning campus life to be shown all over the nation. It is ever seeking to create better public relations with high schools, news- papers, and the citizens of Illinois. Publishing the Illinois Alunmi News is another service of the Association. About 20,000 copies of each issue are distributed to alumni all over the world infoirning them of campus events and providing news about their classmates and friends. The Illini Center in the LaSalle Hotel in Chicago is maintained by the Association in cooperation with the University. It serves as headquarters for alumni of the area. Prof. James C. Colvin Robert H. Fletcher, president I Charles E. Bowen, executive director editor of the Illinois Alumni News William H. Rice, field director Richard W' Hurckes assistant field director

Through its Illini Achievement F imd, organized in 1948, and the income from its endowment funds, the Foundation has sup- ported many projects of major importance to the University. One of the Foundation's opportunities for service to the Uni- versity and the state is to provide thousands of dollars in grants which encourage research and aid staff members who have special training and talent in certain Helds. Each year the Foundation provides scholarships for students who need financial help to further their education. These scholar- ships are awarded on the basis of high academic attainment and definite financial need. Another major division of the Foundatioifs Work is library en- richment. Many important collections have come to the University Library through this program. Special projects, such as memorial funds and the current Altgeld Chimes Restoration Fund, are carried out by the Foundation to meet specific needs of the University. The projects augment fa- cilities provided by state funds and expand the services of the University to its students and the citizens of Illinois.
