Through its Illini Achievement F imd, organized in 1948, and the income from its endowment funds, the Foundation has sup- ported many projects of major importance to the University. One of the Foundation's opportunities for service to the Uni- versity and the state is to provide thousands of dollars in grants which encourage research and aid staff members who have special training and talent in certain Helds. Each year the Foundation provides scholarships for students who need financial help to further their education. These scholar- ships are awarded on the basis of high academic attainment and definite financial need. Another major division of the Foundatioifs Work is library en- richment. Many important collections have come to the University Library through this program. Special projects, such as memorial funds and the current Altgeld Chimes Restoration Fund, are carried out by the Foundation to meet specific needs of the University. The projects augment fa- cilities provided by state funds and expand the services of the University to its students and the citizens of Illinois.
