OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS URBANA, ILLINOIS The l956 ILLIO is a colorful record of the college days of many people. For years it will be brought out frequently to help recall pleasant associations and cherished friendships. For most alumni the yearbook is a record of the most significant years of their lives. It also is a volume that gives dramatic glimpses of the work of a large state university. The University of Illinois reflects a great American aspiration--to make educational opportunity available to the many rather than to the privileged fewg to make education and re- search meaningful in the work of every day, instead of mere attributes of social manners or expressions of isolated scholastic activity. All of us in its service strive to show that the University occupies a central place in the welfare of the State and that its future growth and intellectual strength will be vital to the lives of all the people. Within a few years the University will be asked to do far more than it is doing now--to offer its services to a much larger number of students and increasingly to extend its resources to the citizens of the State. To plan how this shall be done, to win the understanding and support of all the people of Illinois for higher education, to enlarge the University in orderly fashion, will be a tremendous job indeed, but it will be done.
