College of Commerce and Business Administration 1 he (J)llcgc of Commerce and Ikisiness Ailministriition is organized under two de- partments — the Department of Business Or- ganization and Operation which includes AccountancN ' , Business Law, Management, Marketing, and Secretarial Training; and the Department of F,cononiics. After his first two years, an undergraduate speciah es in one of these areas. The research function of the College is served b ' the Bureau of Economics and Busi- ness Research which conducts research in mar- keting, banking and private finance, public finance, taxation, insurance, governmental ac- counting, and related fields. The Bureau pub- lishes two periodicals, the Illinois B isinesr Re- e i and the Current Economic Covwient. Through the Busine.ss Management Ser- ice the College of Commerce and Business Administration provides educational and tech- nical service to business communities in the state. This affords direct contact for both students and facult ' including relationships with real businessmen and business problems. The commerce staff members co-operate with the placement bureau in trying to ob- tain for all graduates positions w hich will har- monize with their college preparation. College of Agriculture Dean Henry Rusk Mumford Hall Under the able guidance of Dean Rusk, tlic students of the College of Agriculture continue to study the land and its products and to A ()rk for better farm family living. The College of Agriculture is a direct out- growth of the Morrill Act of 1862. The legis- lation became popularly known as the Land- grant College Act, since it provided federal support for state educational institutions in a form available to each state. There are sixty- nine land-grant institutions in the United States today, and they provide training for approximately one-fourth of the students en- rolled in the four year colleges and univer- sities. Students in agriculture and home econom- ics find the horizons of their study much wider than the ' once were. They may now encoun- ter such varied studies as the development of antibiotics, dietary problems of older people, the use of radio-active elements, and other studies as modern as tomorrow ' s newspaper. The threefold job of the College of Agri- culture — undergraduate and graduate teach- ing, research, and off-campus teaching through the extension service in agriculture and home economics — has moved forward with time. 28

' r M fK ii I II ■■ r-- ' The College of Education prepares stu- dents for careers in teaching, special educa- tional services, and school adininistrati(jn. Special undergraduate programs are offered in industrial, agricultural, home economics, and elementary curricula. Students have the op- portunitN of teaching under special superxisors in schools cooperating with the College of Education. The Universit - High School, which serves as a laboratory for the college, affords opportunities for experimentation under controlled conditions. The Bureau of Research and Service makes investigations which take the form of direct- ing school surveys. The College sponsors a number of annual conferences designed to meet specific prob- lems of educators and other persons interested in improving the schools. Largest of these meetings is the Illinois Summer Education Conference held on the campus each June in connection with the regular summer session for teachers from all parts of the country.
