College of Agriculture Dean Henry Rusk Mumford Hall Under the able guidance of Dean Rusk, tlic students of the College of Agriculture continue to study the land and its products and to A ()rk for better farm family living. The College of Agriculture is a direct out- growth of the Morrill Act of 1862. The legis- lation became popularly known as the Land- grant College Act, since it provided federal support for state educational institutions in a form available to each state. There are sixty- nine land-grant institutions in the United States today, and they provide training for approximately one-fourth of the students en- rolled in the four year colleges and univer- sities. Students in agriculture and home econom- ics find the horizons of their study much wider than the ' once were. They may now encoun- ter such varied studies as the development of antibiotics, dietary problems of older people, the use of radio-active elements, and other studies as modern as tomorrow ' s newspaper. The threefold job of the College of Agri- culture — undergraduate and graduate teach- ing, research, and off-campus teaching through the extension service in agriculture and home economics — has moved forward with time. 28
