Administrative Officials demonstrations, pulilications, motion pictures, and radio. From its researches the L niversit develops niucli new- knowledge and gathers information from all o er the world. These new facts, added to the old, go not only into teach- ing, but are made available to citizens everywhere. The Uni- verstiy touches almost every field of human interest and activity from archeology and classics to the arts, government, health, agriculture, business, engineering, and science. Carrying out these policies and directly administering the University is the task of the President. Assisting him are the Provost, the Vice President in charge of the Chicago Division, the Deans and Directors of the various units at Champaign- Urbana, the Comptroller, the Director of the Physical Plant, the Dean of Students, and others, each with special respon- sibilities and duties. The Trustees of the Universitx ' , nine elected directly by the people of the state and two ex-officio by reasons of their positions in the state government, select the President of the University and direct the general policies of administration. Arthur Cutts W ' illard, president emeritus Llayd Morey, crjmpi ' olicr The University of Illinois A great university is a collection of colleges, schools, di- visions, institutes, bureaus, services, and experiment stations. In some respects each is autonomous. et they must work togctlier. and certain services must provide for all. To tie this organization together and make it function as a unit, and at the same time to look ahead and plan for the future, is the task of the University ' s administration. Since the war the Universit) of Illinois has doubled in student enrollment and has gro vn similarh in its research and service activities, ' ith tliis growth in size has come a growth in administration. A great uni ersit s operation is as complex as a great industry. Functioning in the interest of the citizens and financed largely by tax funds from them, the L ' niversit ' must seek efficiency, yet must never lose sight of its purpose in education, research, and service. It must be flexible to meet immediate problems, et keep focused on long-range values. The University ' s ork is carried on not onh ' in class- room, laborator , and librar ' , but also through extension.
