UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS URBANA, ILLINOIS OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT Spring , 1948 To the Students of the University of Illinois: At Urbana-Champaign, as at Chicago and Galesburg, we are bigger than ever before. Probably few old resi- dents or Hold tlmersu ever expected to see the day when over 19,000 students would be in full-time residence on the main campus. Of course, this has brought some hard- ships to us all but my observation is that students, faculty, and townspeople have exhibited an extraordinary amount of patience and good will. The housing facili- ties have improved somewhat and the lines for food and other services are perhaps shorter than last year. The main thing is that through the generous provi- sion of the Legislature and the farsightedness of the Board of Trustees we are able to serve the needs of over 27,000 students on four campuses. It is evident that staff members, old and new, are doing their uttermost to maintain a high quality of instruction and guidance. All of us are anxious to keep the educational experience from being diluted. To this end we have added large numbers of staff members. We all hope to have new classroom and laboratory facilities available by the end of 1948. With the com- pletion of the buildings for Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering, to- gether with a large residence hall for women, we shall have some relief. However, we ask every student to be patient in view of a predicted shortage of educational facilities during the junior and senior years. The student body is still predominantly veteran and it is on behalf of these men and women especially that we renew our pledge of loyalty and service to the Uni- versity, State, and Nation. Sincerely yours, afdtfyf George D. Stoddard President
