ll QQ194 ll IHCA I0 Mankind, stunned to realize that it has emerged from six years of war holding the future of humanity in its two hands, faces the exigent problem of maintaining order and peace. Fail- ure in learning the lessons of living together entails the destruc- tion of the human race. A final solution to the intricate problems involved in the creation of a world order lies with our national leaders. Our responsibility as citizens is to guide our leaders toward creating the type of organization We feel is best. To do this we must keep ourselves informed. VVe must realize that we have the power to voice our opinions, and we must exercise this power intelligently. Our voices must not be stilled. YVe dedicate The Illio of 1946 to a future world Where an orderly government will echo the words of the people. May this volume be the first of an endless line of Illios produced in an world at peace. I YVe would humbly pay tribute to the six hundred and nineteen Illini whose devotion and self-sacrifice we revere, and to the courage exemplified by their gold stars. To the nineteen thousand alumni and former students who gave of themselves, their time and their achievements, we offer the grateful hearts of a nation and of a university at peace. To our valiant returning Illini we now consecrate our hearts, our hands, and our minds, for the preservation of the peace in which they believed, and for which they fought.
