GI lllllll G The curricula in Engineering are planned to give a thorough training in mathematics and the physical sciences which are applied in design, construction, and operation of engineering structures, machines, and industrial works. A moderate amount of specializa- tion is provided through options and by special ar- rangement of courses in the senior year. The Engineering Experiment Station, organized in 1903, was the first in any engineering college. Nearly 400 bulletins and circulars recording the results of in- Melvin L. The Station is engaged in many investigations in co-operation with trade associations, government agencies, and with industry. Melvin L. Enger, Dean of the College of Engineer- ing since 1934, heads this college which is meeting the unprecedented demand for engineers created by the astonishing developments and advances in engineer- ing and industrial production during the war. McClure Demi The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers in- structions in the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences, leading to the degrees of bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of science in chemistry and chemical engineering and in home economics. In addition, it offers the necessary work preparatory to medicine, lw, journalism, and edu- cation. Liberal Arts and Sciences, the largest of all col- leges, attained its present status in 1913 when the Col- LIBERAL ART A ll CIE UE lege of Literature and Arts and the College of Sci- ences were combined. A student Personnel Bureau, created in 1937, aHCords the opportunity for personal counseling along the lines of educational, scholastic, and vocational guid- ance. Monroe Dean The College of Education believing that only an enlightened people can be free has as its purpose the instruction of those who will teach our children the ideals and fundamentals of the American way of life. The college offers, on the undergraduate level, pro- fessional preparation for high school teachers. On the graduate level, it offers advanced professional preparation for elementary and high school teachers, supervisors and principals and superintendents of schools, and prepares faculty members to teach and EllllCA'll0 carry on research in Education in colleges and uni- versities. The College of Education had its origin in 1893 under the influence and teaching of Charles de Garmo, Professor of Psychology. In 1900, a Department of Education was set up, which became in 1907, the School of Education and in 1918 received its present title the College of Education.
