McClure Demi The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers in- structions in the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences, leading to the degrees of bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of science in chemistry and chemical engineering and in home economics. In addition, it offers the necessary work preparatory to medicine, lw, journalism, and edu- cation. Liberal Arts and Sciences, the largest of all col- leges, attained its present status in 1913 when the Col- LIBERAL ART A ll CIE UE lege of Literature and Arts and the College of Sci- ences were combined. A student Personnel Bureau, created in 1937, aHCords the opportunity for personal counseling along the lines of educational, scholastic, and vocational guid- ance. The Division of General Studies with a curriculum built around non-departmental courses is designed specifically for students seeking a general education. Mathew T. McClure has been dean since 1934. GI lllllll G The curricula in Engineering are planned to give a thorough training in mathematics and the physical sciences which are applied in design, construction, and operation of engineering structures, machines, and industrial works. A moderate amount of specializa- tion is provided through options and by special ar- rangement of courses in the senior year. The Engineering Experiment Station, organized in 1903, was the first in any engineering college. Nearly 400 bulletins and circulars recording the results of in- Melvin L. Enger Dean vestigations in almost every field of engineering have been published and are to be found in libraries in all parts of the world. The Station is engaged in many investigations in co-operation with trade associations, government agencies, and with industry. Melvin L.
