...t.. , X58 F 77 l i 3 F During your student days on the campus we want you to become acquainted with the personnel cmd work of your Alumni Association. lt maintains con- tact with and records of 80,000 alumni, more than 18,000 of whom are now serving their country in all parts of the world. To assist them ' in following one another and in knowing what is taking place on the campus, the olticial publication of the Association, lllinois Alumni News, is sent and will be sent to others who will 'furnish their address upon their departure from the campus. These records are available to you at all times. It is our hope that we may always keep track of you and demonstrate our interest in your welfare while in school and after you leave. We stand ready at all times to do what we can for the best interest of the University and our thou- sands of alumni, and your suggestions and co- operation in,helping us with this program will be greatly appreciated. EULLEGES HT Ulilililili Many an lllini . . . now l8,5OO to be exact . . . serves his country in foreign fields . . . in muddy foxholes in France and Holland . . . in India and China. But he dreams of the traditions . . . of the campus he left behind him. The days he strolled down the Broadwalk beneath the elms . . . perhaps the trees were budding in the spring . . . or it was raining . . . He used to think it could never rain as much as it did in Champaign . . . now he knew. Old Alma Mater . . . Homecoming . . . the Gettysburg Address in Lincoln Hall . . . Chemistry and Rhet . . . the sings at night in the University Auditorium . . . the fighting lllini. He left them. Now he was fighting . . . to preserve the American way of life . . . the lllini way of life he hopes to return to . . . to the research his University has contributed . . . is contributing . . . to the science and culture of the world. The first soil experiments in the country . . . the first instruction in architecture . . . the betatron. He knows it is a little different nowadays. 290 ofthe 2lOO instructors of the University are in service now. And there are more girls in school now . . . 3,862. And many of the men on campus are in uniform . . . 483 ASTR's . . . 374 V-l2's. And 350 veterans already returned from World War ll. The eight colleges at Urbana await the return of the lllini. They plan ac- celerated programs, new housing+even an airport. The Colleges at Urbana . . . the buildings . . . the traditions . . . will still be here . . . unchanged. The soldier dreams of the day he will come back. His school waits.
