THE IIEHIIS The Dean of Students, Fred Harold T urner, was born in Hume Illinois on March 22 1900 , , . He was made assistant to Th Arkl Cl omas e ark, Dean of Men, after graduating from the University of Illinois in 1922. ln 1931, he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education. His thesis may be found in the ll brary, as it is considered one of the most authoritative accounts ever made of th III' ' ' ' ' e mais Industrial University In 1932 . , he was awarded the full title of Dean ot Men after serving as Acting Dean in the preceding . Dean Turner is greatly interested in student organizations on the cam pus, and is a member of the Illini B of Co t I. Dean Maria p is, ndiana, and re- ceived her high school education there. After graduation from Butler College, she continued her graduate work at Colorado College from which she received her Master of Arts degree. She accepted the position as Dean of Women and Professor of Mathe- matics at Idaho State Normal in Albion, Idaho. She left Idaho to become Dean of Women and Professor of Mathematics at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1937 she received a Litt.D. from that institution. Since 1923 she has served as Dean of Women at the University of Illinois. ln 1924, Dean Leonard founded the national scholastic honorary, Alpha Lambda Delta, for freshmen women. Leonard was born in Indiana ol' I Edward E. Stafford, Dean of Men, was born in Beardstown, Illinois, on November 1, 1896. He spent most of his youth in Alton, Illinois, where he graduated from high school in 1914. He was an employee of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company for a year and a half before entering the University of Illinois in the College of Commerce. In 1917, he ioined the Army Air Force as a private and was later commissioned second lieutenant. Upon his discharge in 1919, Dean Stafford worked as an accountant before returning to the University ot Illinois, where he received his B.S. degree in commerce in June, 1920. At that time he as- sumed a position as secretary to the vice-president of the Goodrich Rubber Company. Sixteen months later he was appointed business manager of the Illini Union and remained in that capacity for seventeen years. When the University began its drive for a new Union Building he devoted most of his time to that campaign. He also became Field Secretary for the Alumni Association and for the University of Illinois Foundation. In 1942 he was named Assistant Dean of Men, and became Acting Dean of Men the following year. He was made permanent Dean of Men in 1944.
