Page 16 ElNVAKll E. ll.x1mi1:'1'T Presirlenf, Board of Trilsfees Message to the Class of 1934: E frequently speak of College or University graduates as 4'College 'trainedl 77 men and women. l hope the members of this Class may rather be referred to asneducatedwmeri and women. Trained animals do their stunts without knowing the reason why. Nevertheless, they do them well but cannot go beyond their training to devise new stunts. Many students pass their examinations because they have been Htrainedw and not because they have been educated or taught to reason or think for themselves. The great need today is for educated men and women who have imagination or initiative, and who are able to create something new and original for the benefit of mankind. Test the value of the past four years you have spent at the University by asking yourself the question whether you place yourself in the class of the Htrainedi' or 'feducatedw individual. You are now entering upon a course of study in the great University of Experience, and your success or failure in life will depend largely upon whether you think in terms of 'aeducationn or Htrainingw. LTHOUGH the past few years have not been easy ones, the devel- opments Which have come about partially as a result of the general economic situation have proved an incentive to many of us. lt has been very encouraging to witness the determination with which a great proportion of our student body has carried on in spite of adversity. One would be calloused indeed who did not gain strength to meet his own problems through observance of the severe sacrihces which parents have made in order that their children might continue to have the advantages of a college education. Frequently the finest characters are developed under adverse con- ditions. Members of the Illini family who make progress now should have no fears for the future. A growing seriousness of purpose upon the part of undergraduate students has become increasingly evident and as college students are among the leaders of their generation this is one of the most hopeful signs that has come out of the present world situation. It is, then, with a very real sense of appreciation that l extend my congratulations to the members of the student body and to their parents. Your achievements in these trying times have been valuable not alone to you but to us as well. M Acting I,I'6.SliFI6Ilf, University of Illinois
