LTHOUGH the past few years have not been easy ones, the devel- opments Which have come about partially as a result of the general economic situation have proved an incentive to many of us. lt has been very encouraging to witness the determination with which a great proportion of our student body has carried on in spite of adversity. One would be calloused indeed who did not gain strength to meet his own problems through observance of the severe sacrihces which parents have made in order that their children might continue to have the advantages of a college education. Frequently the finest characters are developed under adverse con- ditions. Members of the Illini family who make progress now should have no fears for the future. A growing seriousness of purpose upon the part of undergraduate students has become increasingly evident and as college students are among the leaders of their generation this is one of the most hopeful signs that has come out of the present world situation. It is, then, with a very real sense of appreciation that l extend my congratulations to the members of the student body and to their parents.
