O THAT ingenuous soul who after perusal of this volume asketh its theme, we reply Knowledge In the manner of the typical col- legian we have chosen to lay this ILLIO against a backgroundof knowledge. The world is our prov- ince. Do we not reply to the satiric inquisitor that the pursuit of knowledge is our raison d'etre? Call this standardized answer what you willg it is proh- ably the truth. We need not look far for our exemplars. The following few pages are devoted to all those men who have attained heights in the pursuit of knowledge at which most of us shall never do more than gaze in awe and wonder. But if, in our four year quest, we shall have learned to appreciate truly what lies behind their words of learned length and thundering sound, we shall have taken the first step along the road.
